DR. RICK COUFAL, DVM - Founder and Lead Veterinarian at Ponderosa

A native of Colorado, Dr. Coufal grew up on a small family farm surrounded by animals big and small. His participation in 4H over many years ultimately led him to choose veterinary medicine as his profession. He went on to graduate from Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in May of 2000 and started working in the Black Forest community later that year.

He continues to find great satisfaction in the day to day challenges being a vet presents from the basics of preventative health to the more complicated surgical procedures where he excels. Aside from his affinity for animals, Dr. Coufal enjoys wildlife photography, camping, fly-fishing, and spending time with his wife and three children as well as a plethora of pets at home.

I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I graduated from Colorado State University earning a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science as well as my DVM. I have been married for 27 years and have three teen-aged children and have lived in Black Forest for over 17 years. I volunteer my time with 4H, high school music programs, and a local winterguard program.

Dr. Carroll is a 1989 graduate of Louisiana State University and joined Ponderosa Veterinary Clinic in June, 2017. After graduation, he practiced in Marianna, FL before moving to Charlotte, NC in 1994 where he stayed until coming to Colorado Springs to be closer to family. He works with cats and dogs exclusively and has an interest in dermatology and dentistry/oral surgery and attended several courses at the Animal Dental Training Center in Baltimore, MD.

Outside of practice, Dr. Carroll is an avid LSU football fan and enjoys Cajun cooking, grilling, writing, board-gaming, working in his aquaponics greenhouse, and spending time with his wife and 4 dogs and 4 cats. Being new to Colorado, he has begun hiking with his niece whose goal is to take him to the top of Pike’s Peak. He and his wife also enjoy shooting and go out to the range several times a month.
